About

Non-classical automata and grammars

Many non-classical models of automata and grammar-like structures are natural objects of study in theoretical computer science. They are examined from different points of view across several areas, both as theoretical concepts and as formal models for applications.

NCMA provides an opportunity for researchers working on different aspects of non-classical automata and grammars to exchange and develop novel ideas. NCMA 2027 is the 17th edition of the workshop series, following the 2026 edition in Rouen, France. See the full NCMA workshop series history.

Co-located with

DCFS 2027

NCMA 2027 will be co-located with the 28th International Conference on Descriptional Complexity of Formal Systems (DCFS 2027), held back-to-back on the same campus.

Scope

Principal topics

NCMA 2027 focuses on formal models of computation and their applications, as well as contributions addressing classical automata and generative devices, including but not limited to:

  • Formal models inspired by linguistics, bio-computing, text processing, document engineering, self-assembly, etc.
  • Bio-inspired models of automata and generative devices
  • Cellular automata
  • Forgetting automata and restarting automata
  • Automata with additional resources, regulated rewriting / automata
  • Networks of automata or generative devices
  • Models of cooperation and communication
  • Quantum automata
  • Automata in the framework of membrane computing
  • Complexity aspects for formal systems

Publication

Proceedings

As in previous editions, proceedings are expected to be published in the EPTCS series.

Following the 2026 edition, the accompanying special issue is expected to appear in Acta Informatica.
